For this week’s Mood Playlist, we’re giving you 5 songs by K-Pop idol group members that are perfect for a warm winter afternoon to make you feel like the main character of a movie. It is quite common in the K-Pop industry for group members to pursue solo endeavors simultaneously alongside group activities. As a matter of fact, it is often a part of their individual contracts! As such, it is also quite natural for fans to expect their idols to have solo debuts after a point in their musical careers. It is also important to note that an artist may have solo songs but it might not always necessarily count as their solo debut. Making a solo debut is quite an official matter and as such, is very significant. Here are 5 songs, perfect for a winter afternoon, that will convince you that the respective artists deserve a solo debut!
1. SF9’s HwiYoung - ‘Empty’
HwiYoung has a gift for musically expressing the deepest of feelings effortlessly. That is exactly what he does in ‘Empty’, a self-produced song that is also written by HwiYoung himself. You can listen to more of HwiYoung’s solo work on his personal SoundCloud. Making a solo debut has been on HwiYoung’s dream list for quite a while now. He once mentioned in an interview with “GQ Korea” that regarding his solo debut, “Rather than ‘someday,’ I want to do it as quickly as possible, but it’s not easy. There are a lot of people in the world, and it only takes a moment for someone like me to be forgotten. This is a generation in which something new comes out every day, so maybe it will be okay if I release something when I want to release it. I can be happy if it does well and sad if it doesn’t. I am also uploading self-produced songs to SoundCloud.” We cannot wait for HwiYoung’s solo debut! Until then, let’s look forward to SF9’s upcoming comeback!
2. ONEUS’ Ravn - ‘dontmakemeblue’
ONEUS’ Ravn has an incredibly impressive track record of producing and writing music, besides, of course, being a multifaceted idol. His own Soundcloud is like a musical journal and features some stunning pieces of art. This song in particular, is written, recorded, mixed, and mastered by Ravn himself and it is nothing short of a pastel indie dream. We hope Ravn will get the chance to make his solo debut soon!
3. THE BOYZ’ SunWoo - ‘광합성’ (prod. ONEWE’s CyA)
THE BOYZ have an official SoundCloud where many of the members share their self-produced creations. While all of them are masterpieces, this collaboration between SunWoo and ONEWE’s CyA is definitely one that will live in your head rent-free. It is incredibly refreshing to see both these young artists explore their authentic musicality and come together to create this song.
4. PENTAGON’s Yuto - ‘傷〜wounds〜’
There’s something magical about Yuto’s artistic expression that leaves listeners completely immersed in his music. His SoundCloud is a goldmine of hidden gems that deserve to be released officially! A completely Japanese solo debut would be a much-needed change in the K-Pop industry, especially since it is so rare. We cannot wait for the day Yuto debuts solo and marks a cultural reset for all of us.
5. ASTRO’s Rocky & CHAWOO - ‘Star’
Finally, this playlist of songs to listen to during a warm winter afternoon, would not be complete without the comfort idol of millions, ASTRO’s Rocky. Rocky is not just a singer but also a producer, composer, and songwriter with a unique perspective on music and the effect it can have. The song ‘Star’, alongside CHAWOO, is not only soothing but also deeply touching, perfect for dusk. It is a surprise that Rocky has not debuted solo yet but we hope it will happen soon!
