“I think it is important that the Asian hip-hop scene and its artists support and uplift each other,” said Jay Park, who is the founder of the globally celebrated label, H1GHR MUSIC. “The beautiful thing about hip-hop is you can create something from nothing and it can really change your life and the lives of the people around you. No matter what country you’re from or what language you speak, we can all relate through hip-hop and it’s a great way to discover and learn each other’s culture. I think it’s dope that we can listen to Malay hip-hop, bob our heads and find inspiration in it.” An official collaboration between H1GHR MUSIC and Def Jam South East Asia, “LOTUS” H1GHR Remix came about after Malaysian rap icon, Joe Flizzow, reached out to his friend Jay Park and said he wanted to build a bridge between Asian hip-hop.
H1GHR MUSIC was founded in 2017 as a passion project for Jay Park with the purpose of shining a light on talented but undiscovered artists in his hometowns of Seattle and Seoul. “H1GHR MUSIC is my blood, sweat and tears,” Jay Park said. After working his way into the upper echelons of the music industry, both in the US where he had signed to Jay-Z’s label, Roc Nation, and in South Korea, where he is a beloved household name, Jay Park has refocused his efforts into cultivating the next generation of stars. Through H1GHR MUSIC, Jay Park has redefined the Korean hip-hop scene and ushered in the mainstream acceptance of the genre. The award-winning label is home to a diverse cast of artists who are reshaping the music landscape in Korea and beyond. Its roster includes pH-1, Sik-K, BIG Naughty, Woodie Gochild, TRADE L, WOOGIE, GroovyRoom, and HAON, as well as JAY B and JMIN, who both joined the label this year.
In less than five years since its inception, H1GHR MUSIC has won “Label Of The Year”at the 2021 Korean Hip Hop Awards, generated billions of streaming numbers, and released a two-part, label compilation album, something that has never been done before in Korean entertainment. Released summer 2020, [H1GHR : RED TAPE] and [H1GHR : BLUE TAPE] (each a 14-track project), proved how H1GHR MUSIC remains steadfast in doing things incredibly different, yet exceptionally well. Standouts from the project included “The Purge,” “How We Rock,” and “Gotta Go.” Upon reflecting on H1GHR MUSIC’s growth, “it has been tremendous,” Jay Park said. “With the release of the compilation album, adding new additions to the crew and getting multiple awards, I think locally and internationally H1GHR MUSIC is getting the recognition it deserves. But we still have a long way to go!” Stay tuned for more news from H1GHR MUSIC.
