The web drama stars Apink’s EunJi (as the character Kang JiGu), Han SunHwa (as Han JiYeon), Lee SunBin (as Ahn SoHee), and Super Junior’s SiWon (as Kang BukGu). It is an authentic drama that tells the story of the daily lives of three women who believe that every day is a good day to have a drink. The drama is originally based on a webtoon called “술꾼도시 처녀들” which can be directly translated to “Drinker City Girls”. It was written by MiKkang and you can read the webtoon in Korean here. Although the webtoon and K-Drama are not exactly the same, none of the differences drastically change the story. However, you might find some of the differences interesting. So, here is a randomly ordered list of 4 differences between the “Work Later, Drink Now” web drama and the webtoon. Warning: This article might contain spoilers for episodes 1-4 of the “Work Later, Drink Now” web drama and episodes 1-8 of the webtoon.
1. The characters’ names and occupations
In the K-Drama, we meet each girl through their first date with Kim HakSoo (played by Kim JiSuk) and get a small narration explaining their overall vibe and ideologies. In the webtoon, we get to read their profiles and realize that they have different names and occupations although the character is the same. In the drama, Ahn SoHee is a variety show writer who works at a media company. However, in the webtoon, she works at a publishing company and her name is Jeong JinA. Kang JiGu is an origami YouTuber in the web drama, but in the webtoon, her name is Go Myung and she is a freelance writer. The final member of our trio is named Han JiYeon in the drama and she is a yoga instructor. In the webtoon, her name is Shim MiHan and she is a web designer who works at a company. Note: the characters will be referred to by their K-Drama names for the remainder of the article to not cause confusion.
2. Their drinking habits
The webtoon shares a little bit more about the characters upfront. It especially places focus on the fact that each member of the trio has drinking habits. The members have habits related to their drinking after an outing in the drama but the webtoon focuses particularly on things that they do whilst they are drunk. Ahn SoHee has a habit of accidentally taking objects from the bar or restaurant home. Kang JiGu drunkenly cries about missing her pet cat (she doesn’t have a pet cat in the drama). Whilst Han JiYeon’s drinking habit has never been seen by anyone.
3. Their relationship status at the beginning of the story
As mentioned before, in the web drama, we meet the girls through a series of blind dates. However, they don’t go well and they end up spending Christmas single and with each other. This is different from the webtoon where Han JiYeon is already seeing someone. She has gone on a few dates with a guy who takes her to restaurants and cafes. She even complains about how they haven’t gone drinking together yet.
4. Storytelling style
Although “Work Later, Drink Now” is a slice-of-life type of drama, the web drama has a clearer storyline and easier-to-follow plot which focuses on more than just the drinking scenes but also the work and personal life of the characters. The webtoon (at least in the first few episodes) feels more like a peek into just the drinking lives of the girls. There are storylines that are hinted at and will clearly develop over time but the webtoon focuses significantly more on their drinking antics than it does on their work or personal storylines in the beginning. These are only a few of the differences that we’ve spotted. Have you spotted any other differences between the drama and the webtoon for “Work Later, Drink Now”? What do you think of the differences?
